Steve Alter of Steve's Fossil Shark Teeth started his business on the web in 1997. At that time, there were only a few websites selling fossils, none exclusively dedicated to fossil shark teeth. Steve’s sells both wholesale and retail. Steve’s website remains one of the top-two ranked shark teeth pages, and they have further expanded retail offerings through a new website. Additionally, Steve sells on eBay, Etsy, Facebook, and Instagram. You can find links to all of these outlets on his profile page.
In Tucson, Steve’s megalodon teeth are primarily sold in bulk wholesale. He has been selling since 1999. As one of the largest selections of wholesale shark teeth available in the industry, Steve’s benefits buyers, providing a healthy resale profit. Repeat business thrives, but Steve always looks for new buyers to partner with. During the Tucson Gem, Mineral & Fossil Showcase, Steve sells at the Fossil & Mineral Alley at Days Inn, Rooms 151/153, together with Tony Perez of Fossils Online.
The Beginnings: Florida and Beyond
Steve grew up collecting fossil shark teeth along the Florida coast as a kid. Like a pirate searching for bounty, he never dreamed of selling a single tooth. Each was a priceless treasure. Serving in the U.S. Air Force, he started the business to sell megalodon teeth he had accumulated. The timing was perfect. Everything took off. Now, dozens, even hundreds, of similar smaller businesses are operating that can all be traced back to Steve’s early start. His wife, Wara, helps run the business. Steve handles scuba diving, tooth acquisition, wholesale, and shipping. Wara manages photography, marketing, and social media. They are an accomplished team working together to ensure the best products and services in the industry.
Informing the Next Generation and Scientific Discoveries
Social media is Steve’s educational tool to share facts and information about extinct and modern shark species to inform new generations about these fascinating creatures. Early on, Steve was immersed in the scientific study of fossil shark teeth. Steve focused on identifying and ensuring that experts properly documented and studied new species. A notable contribution was the donation of a specimen that led to the discovery of a previously unnamed shark species named after Steve by Russian scientist Vladimir Kozlov. What an honor! The species is Trigonotodus alteri, also known as the "cusped giant thresher shark."
Steve has written many articles and blogs on shark evolution and facts that would eventually become the basis for many scientific papers years later.
Beyond the Thrill of the Hunt: A Brush with a Frisky Sea Turtle
Tucson has afforded many amazing long-term friends, but Steve’s true passion is and always will be collecting fossil shark teeth. Scuba diving for megalodon teeth is a dangerous activity with hazards including limited-to-zero visibility, deep water, strong currents, boat traffic, sharks, gators, stingrays, getting swept out to sea, underwater logs, and technical issues. Of all those hazards, Steve has only been attacked once over the years. A lonely sea turtle decided he was "purty.” Though initially terrified, he was able to shake him off. That frisky sea turtle pointed him right to the find of his life, the best meg tooth he had found up to that point.
Steve's Fossil Shark Teeth: Millions of Years in the Making
COVID was an interesting time in the fossil world. This turned out to be a new beginning in the collection of fossils. Demand for fossils (especially megalodon teeth) increased three or four times seemingly overnight and has not subsided. COVID created the perfect profitable environment for the wholesale megalodon teeth industry. Steve’s has a very large inventory of fossil megalodon teeth and other species. Their buying power allows them to offer extremely competitive prices. A one-time sale is not their business model. They are constantly striving to establish long-term relationships with customers.
