The New York Gems, Jewelry & Mineral Show, the oldest gem show in New York City, is sponsored by the New York Mineralogical Club and brings a brilliant array of gemstones and minerals to Midtown Manhattan. The show is held bi-annually at The High School of Fashion Industries with upcoming show dates of November 9-10, 2024, and March 8-9, 2025, and is open to both retail and wholesale customers. The twenty-five vendors include some of the original exhibitors in the show.
Participants are eligible for hourly door prizes, and new to the event this year is on-site geode cracking, offering the experience of unveiling never-before-seen crystal formations. Free educational lectures exploring industry and earth science topics are organized by the New York Mineralogical Club on both Saturday and Sunday and are open to all attendees.
The New York Mineralogical Club, the oldest continually operating mineral club in the U.S., founded in 1886, has sponsored the show since its inception in the late 1980s. The club’s notable contributions to the mineral world include a vast 700-plus piece collection of New York City specimens displayed in the American Museum of Natural History, including the ‘Subway Garnet’ – a 6-inch almandine garnet discovered in 1885. The club’s membership includes notable historical figures such as Marie Curie, GeorgeF. Kunz, and the oldest continuous member of the club, Saul Krotki.
Due to challenging times of the pandemic, a retiring owner — Tony Nikischer of Excalibur Mineral Corp. — and the venue being sold, the New York Gem, Jewelry & Mineral Show’s future was in question. Mohamed Bary of Bary Gems Inc., a long-time exhibitor in the show, purchased the event in 2021 and moved it to its current location, ensuring its continuation and preservation. Bary, a New York resident with origins as a traveling salesman from Sri Lanka, is grateful to be an integral part of an event with such a rich history in the state that supports education and commerce within the gem and mineral community.
The venue is centrally located in Midtown Manhattan, blocks away from popular attractions, including Madison Square Garden, Chelsea Pier, and the iconic Empire State Building. It is easily accessible from the Lincoln, Holland, and Queens-Midtown Tunnels and easily accessed by all forms of public transportation. The convenient hours of this two-day event make for a great pairing with some favorite New York City destinations. Enjoy free street parking on weekends – a great score for any urban trip, leaving more money to spend on rocks!
