The Black Hills Institute of Geological Research (BHIGR), based in Hill City, South Dakota, is renowned globally for its expertise in paleontology and geology. Founded in 1978, it has become a leading institution in fossil excavation, preparation, and exhibition. BHIGR is particularly famous for its work on iconic dinosaur specimens like "SUE," the most complete Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton when discovered, and "STAN™," another exceptional T. rex fossil that has become the most replicated and displayed T. rex worldwide.
The Institute's activities span fieldwork, fossil preparation, molding, casting, and mounting of both real and replica fossils. Its innovative techniques ensure that its exhibits are both scientifically accurate and visually striking. BHIGR's contributions are showcased in prestigious museums worldwide, including the Smithsonian Institution, Tokyo’s National Science Museum, and the Royal Tyrrell Museum in Canada.
In addition to its role in research and education, the Institute maintains an extensive collection of fossils, minerals, and geological specimens available for study and display. It also produces cast replicas of significant fossils for scientific, educational, and commercial purposes.
