Mohamed Bary is from an old Dutch Fort in Sri Lanka which is considered as the 72^nd ancestral city of Galle, Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka is a very popular source of precious gemstones, and at the early age of 18, Mohamed started a gem business by visiting the gem mining areas in Sri Lanka and purchasing rough gemstones to sell on the streets. It was an interesting time. Galle is an old Dutch city with many European tourists. Mohamed would demonstrate how gemstones were cut and made and make a pretty good income by selling his gems. Eventually, he'd convert the veranda of his home to a tourist gem shop and called it Bary & Co. This was the very first shop of its kind in Galle Fort and eventually gained a good reputation. Mohamed developed a good customer base from the European tourists who would buy his gemstones on a regular basis.

In 1984, there was an American gem buyer who visited Bary & Co. making large purchases and reselling in the United States. In 1988, this American customer sponsored Mohamed to visit the Tucson Gem Show. From 1988 thru 2000, Mohamed made nearly 40 trips from Sri Lanka to the U.S., and eventually, Mohamed relocated with his family to the U.S. and started Bary Gems, Inc., in New York.
