Leonard began business digging rocks around the US on his summer vacations from teaching. He got serious about it when he learned that rockshops would buy them and cover his travel expenses. He was also competing with his collection at shows all round the country. Before long he learned that to really compete would require specimens he could not afford, so he decided to become a retail dealer. That was in 1973 and he is still at it. He started as Minerals America at a show in Opelika, Alabama. Beginners start where they can! Before long he was selling at club shows around the Southest from his Orlando, FL base. That led to Federation shows in the summer. At one in San Diego, CA in the late 1970s, he invited Cal Graeber to share his booth, Cal had just left Pala International and needed a show. That worked out so well that they still work together at major shows as Graeber & Himes, the longest running 'partnership' in the mineral business (excepting family groups). Both Leonard and Cal operate mineral specimen preparation labs and do appraisal work between shows. Their selection of crystals and rare mineral species is among the most varied you will see at shows. Their many years of hard work have earned them international respect.
